Quorn 1 Market Drayton Town 1
Market Drayton Town deservedly got back on track after a string of five UniBond League South defeats with this hard-won draw at Quorn that earned the praise of player-manager Andy Pryce.
"We played really well and, with just a little luck, could have nicked maximum points in the last 10 minutes or so," he said.
"Unfortunately, we still are not getting the breaks we deserve in front of goal.
"This was my third game since taking over as manager and while I could never complain about the effort the lads put into the previous two, this was our best performance as a team.
"After five consecutive defeats - some of which we have played well in - it was great to pick up a point again.
"We have three games left before Christmas and we really want to make them pay as a present to the fans who have continued backing us through some difficult times."
Make no mistake about it, this was a good performance by Town. Quorn are a far better side than their lowly standing in the league suggests, having pocketed something like £12,000 and picking off some notable scalps in their various cup exploits this season.
It was Town, however, who started strongly on Saturday, with Nicky Porter blasting them into the lead with a fine sixth minute free kick the keeper could not cope with.
Quorn hit back dangerously but a mixture of good defensive work and their own inaccurate, over-anxious shooting helped Town keep their noses in front at the break.
On balance, Kristopher Andrews's equaliser on the hour was a little overdue and Town were lucky to have Pryce on top form as Quorn picked up the pace looking for a second.
The Town boss made a series of good saves but his experience really told when he triumphed in a one-on-one confrontation when his opponent seemed to hold all the aces.
It helped give Town the confidence to go looking for a winner in the closing stages - and they came very close to getting it as Marc Stallard's header from a corner flashed inches off the mark and then Martyn Davies was just wide from Paul Bowyer's knock-down.
Team skipper Jason Francis, who had rejected an approach to sign for Chasetown before the match, missed the last six minutes through injury - and, ironically, is out of Town's visit to Chasetown on Saturday, December 19.
Francis is suspended for that game and the home date with Shepshed Dynamo on Saturday, December 12.
